Malaysia cancels 'too sexy' Avril Lavigne concert

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia on Tuesday canceled a concert by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne, saying it may taint the Muslim-majority country's independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being "too sexy."


The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne's show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day.

"It is not timely. It's not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for," said Shukran Ibrahim, a senior official from the culture ministry's department that vets all foreign artists.

The decision came after the youth wing of a fundamentalist opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, called for the show's cancellation.

Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party youth official, told The Associated Press on Monday that Lavigne's show was "considered too sexy for us" and would promote the wrong values just before independence day.

"We don't want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models," he said.

Lavigne, who became famous with her 2002 debut album "Let's Go," had planned to launch her monthlong Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur.

The show's promoter, Galaxy Group, can request a new date for the concert, which will be considered by the ministry, Shukran said. Galaxy officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Galaxy began advertising the Grammy-nominated rock singer's concert this month even though it had yet to obtain a government permit, which is mandatory for all foreign music shows. It said Monday about half the concert tickets had been sold.

Last year, R&B singer Beyonce moved her show from Malaysia to Indonesia, and Christina Aguilera skipped the country on an Asian tour after a controversy erupted over a dress code for foreign artists.

Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.

Still, members of PAS and other conservative Muslims often protest against Western and even Malaysian music shows that they deem to be inappropriate.

The local organizer of a Pussycat Dolls concert in 2006 was fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,857) after the U.S. girl group was accused of flouting decency regulations.

Update: Avril may still have a concert in Malaysia but was asked to postpone the original concert (not on August 29th) .
According to the official, they "did not reject the concert" but aked the show promoters to " find another date as the original date is so close to the independence day."



Oh well, since the previous news has caused so much disappointment already, I just hope that the officials make up their mind and give everybody a "Yes" or "No" answer. if Avril's show promoters could do all the rearrangement...and IF it fits Avril's schedule......then she may still have her concert in Malaysia before she kicks off her tour in Asia.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's government has told promoters of a concert by Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne to postpone the show because it could mar the country's independence day celebrations, an official said on Wednesday.

The decision came after the opposition Islamic party, Parti se-Islam Malaysia, objected to the August 29 concert in Kuala Lumpur, saying that mainly Muslim Malaysia should not ape Western values and cultures.

Although Malaysia is a moderate Muslim country with sizeable non-Muslim minorities, conservative groups often frown upon departures from strict interpretations of the Koran.

A culture ministry official said the show's promoters now have to find another slot for Lavigne.

"We did not reject the concert. We asked them to find another date as the original date is so close to the independence day," the official said. "That's the only reason."

A spokesman for the organizers said more than half of the tickets had already been sold. "As far as we are concerned, the show is still on," he said. Malaysia marks its 51st year of independence from Britain on August 31.

Last October, U.S. R&B star Beyonce Knowles axed her debut concert in Malaysia in protest against the country's ultra-strict dress code and over fears of a Muslim outcry over her show.

But a year ago, U.S. singer Gwen Stefani performed in Malaysia despite calls from Muslim students to cancel the concert because they deemed it too obscene.

there's no official news been published yet about the cancellation yet.. so we'll have to wait and see what happens later ..
but if it's true, i feel sorry for the Malaysian fans who have been waited so long to see Avril

you put it twice,the other is deleted already

ok.. now Avril says they've "actually been approved by the government to play a show," and had "already sold 10,000 tickets there, so I will be going to put on a concert for the fans." i guess the concert is back on then . ..? yes? hmmm... we'll see later...

Cabinet Approves Avril Lavigne's Concert


KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Canadian pop-rock star Avril Lavigne is allowed to perform at a concert here on Aug 29 following an assurance by its organiser that there would not be any negative elements in her performance.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal said the decision to allow the concert was made by the cabinet Friday after studying the assurances given by the concert organiser, Galaxy Group.

"It giving the approval, the cabinet also instructed the (unity, culture, arts and heritage) ministry to monitor the concert to ensure that the performances do not clash with the Malaysian culture and values," he told Bernama Saturday.

Shafie said the ministry had imposed certain conditions on the organiser so that the concert would not create bad influence, especially on youngsters, or disrupt the patriotic celebrations being carried out to commemorate the country's 51st Merdeka celebration on Aug 31.

Galaxy Group is said to have began advertising the concert way ahead before getting an approval from the Central Committee For Filming and Performance by Foreign Artists (Puspal).

To avoid a similar situation in future, Shafie said, organisers would have to obtain approval from Puspal before they could organise concerts or other activities involving foreign artists.

"When they want to organise concerts, they have to apply for permission first to ensure compliance in terms of dressing, performance and when it is to be held so that it will not clash with programmes like the Merdeka month and also the venue," he added.

Puspal comprises the ministry, the Foreign Ministry, Home Ministry, Housing and Local Government Ministry, Tourism Malaysia, the police, Customs, Immigration, the Islamic Religious Department, the Inland Revenue Board and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
